Thomas Appelt

Thomas joined the NAMI Lowcountry board in December 2024.
He graduated in 1982 with a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering (University Siegen, Germany) and in 2004, successfully completed the General Manager Program at Harvard Business School.  In 2021, he retired following 31 years of service with Corning Incorporated which encompassed assignments in Germany, China, and Singapore as well as living and working in Corning NY.
As to the Lowcountry: Hilton Head Island has been an anchor point for the Appelt family since 1995, initially mainly as a vacation destination but since 2020 as permanent residence. My wife and I enjoy the beautiful environment and love to host children and grandchildren.

My Story

Our late son Max struggled with Mental Health issues following a traumatic brain injury. Like many parents, we were stunned and didn't know who to turn to for help and support. Local NAMI organizations in NY, MA ,and ultimately NAMI Lowcountry were extremely helpful as we tried our best to help Max. We learned that there is a lot to be improved when it comes to mental health, certainly on the treatment side but also when it comes to legal and societal issues and challenges.

I am trained as a family support facilitator and look forward to working with the NAMI Lowcountry board. What NAMI does and stands for does matter and I will do my best to help.
